7th Annual Strolling of the Heifers Parade Theme ‘Live Green!’; Deadline for Applications May 1st

Brattleboro, Vermont - The 7th Annual Strolling of the Heifers Parade is currently accepting applications from groups, organizations and entertainers that want to participate in this year’s fun-filled animal and entertainment cavalcade. According to parade chairman Bob Doney, this Top Ten Summer Event on Saturday, June 7, 2008, will be more entertaining than ever. The theme of the parade is “Live Green!” So in addition to featuring nationally renowned acts and a herd of 100 bovine beauties who are the event’s stars, many local schools will create floats that focus on how to live in greater harmony with the earth. For example, Hilltop Montessori School (Brattleboro), which has undertaken a school wide composting project underwritten by a Heifer Educational Fund grant, will have a “living soil” float pulled by oxen or horses. The school’s youngest students will be dressed in brown as dirtballs. And other students will be dressed as vegetable and soil components, such as worms. The students will sing songs related to composting such as “Dirt Made My Lunch” and “Put Me on the Compost Pile.” The Compass School (Westminster Station) will create a float that makes clear their strong stance against genetically engineered food. Their float will feature two thrones. The GMO-free “Good Corn Pollen Fairy will be seated on one of them. The genetically-engineered “Bad Pollen Fairy” will be perched on the other. The float also will feature giant paper Mache fruits and vegetables bearing the message: “Local Food is the Best Food.”

If you are interested in participating in the parade, call Bob Doney at 802-254-4299 for an application form. There is no cost for submitting the one-page application form. Applications must be received by Mr. Doney by May 1, 2008 to be eligible. There is a cap on the number of “acts” in the parade so send in your application if you already have one or get an application form from Mr. Doney as soon as possible.

Parade participants are encouraged to focus on “Live Green!” and agriculturally related themes. 4-H Clubs, entertainers, schools and other “acts” are welcome to participant. Only individuals and groups that are pre-approved will be allowed to take part in the parade. Please note: all vehicles other than farm equipment are prohibited from use in the event.
